"From Slack's perspective, what remains to be seen is whether it will continue to exist as a stand-alone product or whether it will continue to be absorbed by Salesforce," said Castanon.

In his NoJitter column , Nemertes Research analyst Irwin Lazar postulates a scenario in which Slack is incorporated entirely into Salesforce, acting exclusively as an interface to Salesforce tools. The likelihood of this is low, he says. “This would mean a reduction in Slack's non-Salesforce customer base. Considering what Salesforce is paying for Slack, I don't see that likely outcome, ”he wrote.

Top Salesforce executives made it clear that keeping Slack independent is the plan now, and Slack CEO and co-founder Stewart Butterfield will continue to lead the business under Salesforce. Among them is Tableau, purchased for $ 15.7 billion last year; MuleSoft, acquired the previous year for $ 6.5 billion; and Quip for $ 750 million in 2016.

While it is relatively early for Tableau in the Salesforce umbrella, Quip and MuleSoft have gradually been integrated more deeply into the Salesforce platform, while standalone products remain.
